Potato health with a little spice

This past week, I've been enjoying a delightful blend of Rooibos, African Potato, and Nutmeg tea. The combination of flavours and spices is perfect, especially during the chilly weather in Cape Town. Rooibos, known for its numerous health benefits, now has an added punch with these extra ingredients, making it even easier to stay healthy.

The African Potato plant, despite its name, is not related to the potatoes we're familiar with. It belongs to the lily family and is native to South Africa. Traditional healers have been using it for years to boost the immune system.

Fun fact: Its nutrient value is believed to be 50,000 times greater than that of modern vegetables. This bitter plant is used for a wide range of conditions, including urinary tract disorders, diabetes, bleeding, prostate problems, and lung disease. Scientists also believe that it contains a substance called beta-sitosterol, which could help strengthen the immune system.

Nutmeg, a ground spice, is also included in this tea. It contains antioxidants and offers several benefits, such as pain relief, soothing indigestion, promoting skin health, and boosting the immune system.

Please note that if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, there isn't enough reliable information about the safety of taking African wild potatoes. It's recommended to err on the safe side and avoid using them during this time.

To prepare the tea, simply pour boiling water into a cup and add one tea bag. Let it steep for 2-5 minutes or boil the tea on the stove for the same duration. It's best to enjoy the tea without milk and sugar. If you prefer a refreshing cold tea, you can also chill it in the fridge for up to 48 hours. However, it's important to note that this tea is not recommended for children younger than two years old.
